Late 19th century game board from western New York state. Boards such as this were done by professional painters who typically worked in shops where items other game boards were also paint-decorated. The fine quality of the gold gilt and embellishments on the piece are most often referred to as 'coach' decoration. Note such fine boards as this were most often made for the purpose of playing chess as opposed to checkers. This example dating to the 1880's or 90's shows wear giving this otherwise academic piece a warmth from being played over the years. The dark sienna background is most unusual and also adds to its appeal. This is a heavy board measuring approximately 18 1/4" square and set in a 1 1/4" deep frame.
